We loved Chile, but arriving in Bolivia was like being smacked around the chops by a big wet slice of South America. The lovely stern, wide, but rather pretty faced Cholita’s. With their huge skirts, ample hips, wrinkly stockings, bowler hats and the weird curtain tie back things which they attach to the end of their plaits to look like hair extensions, we LOVE the Cholita’s
But what did take the wind out of our sales, and I mean
literally was the altitude. Fortunately, neither Glenn or I have really
suffered the sickness/dizziness side effects yet but sleeping at high altitude
we have. It’s like trying to get to sleep with a lead weight on your chest. Not
very pleasant! In fact, damn right horrible after a couple of nights of it.
The other thing is that you can be in the most amazing
place, full of amazing Plaza’s, churches, museums etc, but can you be arsed to
walk up all of those steps to see them?. Literally after about 5 steps we are
pulling on air.
Despite the high altitude, we are both glad we came to
Bolivia. We’ve enjoyed the amazingly
vast salt flats of Uyuni. The pretty plaza and winding cobbled roads of Potosi.
Pretty Sucre and at an altitude you can sleep in, so we did! Gritty La Paz and
Death Road which I never EVER thought I would do and loved every minute of it.
Then finally, tiny touristy Copacabana with the dreaded trek of Isla Del Sol
(that got Glenn back for the Volcano)
Thank you Bolivia, whilst your food isn’t up to much, we’ve
still very much enjoyed what you’ve had to offer. We would recommend you to
friends but perhaps suggest they tie in the trip with Peru (and chew plenty of
coca leaves)
