Malaysia and
Singapore Round up
Malaysia wasn’t originally on our plan but given we were so
close, desperate for a change from 2 months of Indonesian food plus it gave us
a chance to head towards Singapore overland, we headed for Kula Lumpur and a
bit of civilisation.
Having previously been to KL on a work trip, I bigged up
Malaysian food to Glenn but he wasn’t so impressed and I don’t blame him after
eating the food in rainy Langkawi, but he definitely agreed it was an
improvement on Indonesia.
Singapore food was great, diverse and cheap. However
everything other than the food was very expensive!, We loved the contrast of
old and new equally impressive architecture it had to offer. Too many rules
though! Along with smoking in the street, jaywalking there are also rules about
disposing of chewing gum. Did you know that you could be fined a hefty amount if
you brought too may wrigglys into the country?
Top picks for us:
·
Perhentian Islands, we loved them and didn’t
want to leave! Still relatively unspoilt, it had the usual but more laid back
hippy travellers feel but unlike Thailand, it’s a place where the Malaysians
still holiday, making it more authentic. Not to mention Scuba Diving for £12 a
pop!
·
The food (more Shel than Glenn)
·
Biking through Cameron Highlands, a nice change
from cities and beaches, plus a great temperature and we even got to have a
cream tea!
Top Tips:
1.
Very safe for female travellers
2.
Check out Malaysia for your PADI qualifications
rather than Thailand’s well-trodden Koh Tao. Much prettier, usually run by
westerners and cheap as you like!
3.
Stick to spirits, not beers!
